The spirit of travel

From the shores of the Mediterranean to the gates of the Sahara, this journey invites you to cross Algérie from north to south, along an itinerary connecting Oran, Algiers, Constantine, the Aurès, the M'Zab and the Grand Erg Occidental. Over seventeen days, the landscapes evolve with each stage, as do the cultures and architectures that bear witness to the country's diversity.

The journey begins in Oran, marked by Andalusian, Ottoman, Spanish and French heritage, before following the Mediterranean coast towards Cherchell and Tipaza. You then reach Algiers the White, where you discover in particular the Casbah, the Botanical Garden, the Basilica of Notre-Dame d'Afrique and the Museum of Fine Arts. Next, heading east towards the great sites of Roman Algérie with Djemila, then Constantine, suspended above the Rhumel gorges, and Timgad. The road continues through the Aurès, land of the Chaouias, passing through the Balconies of Ghoufi and the El Kantara gorges, which gradually mark the entry into Saharan landscapes. After Biskra and Bou Saâda, another facet of the journey unfolds, that of oases and the desert. In Ghardaïa and in the pentapolis of the M'Zab, you discover local urban and hydraulic traditions, before continuing through the Erg Occidental to El Goléa, then towards Timimoun the Red, capital of the Gourara surrounded by dunes and palm groves.

This crossing thus allows you to discover, throughout one and the same journey, ancient cities, Mediterranean towns, mountains, oases, ksour and desert landscapes, while grasping the richness of Algérie's cultural and architectural heritage.

Important: this journey is also offered in 13 days. This version ends in Ghardaïa, in the M'Zab valley.

From Cherchell to Tipaza, Following Traces of Ancient Algeria

Oran → Tipaza

5h30380 km

Early departure heading east, along the Mediterranean coast. You leave Oran and its wine-growing hinterland to reach the Algiers coastline and Cherchell, the ancient Caesarea of Mauretania. Capital of the kingdom of Juba II and Cleopatra Selene, daughter of Cleopatra VII and Mark Antony, at the turn of our era, Cherchell became one of the great cultural centers of the Berber-Roman world. You visit the archaeological museum of Cherchell, renowned for its collection of ancient sculptures and its collection dedicated to African Greco-Roman art. You then discover the remains of the baths and the aqueduct that once supplied the city from Atlas springs.

Lunch in Cherchell.

In the afternoon, you continue your journey to Tipaza (or Tipasa), an ancient Phoenician city that became a Roman colony and is listed as UNESCO World Heritage. In a Mediterranean setting where the remains slope gently down to the sea, you discover the forum, the theatre, the Christian basilica and the Villa of Frescoes.

You explore these places in this atmosphere that inspired Albert Camus, who loved to stay in Tipaza and evoked his "Tyrrhenian nuptials".

White Algiers, from the Casbah to Notre-Dame d'Afrique

Morning visit to the Royal Mausoleum of Mauritania, known as the "Tomb of the Christian Woman" — a misleading popular name since this monumental funerary monument, topped with a stepped cone, is believed to house the tombs of Juba II and Cleopatra Selene. Overlooking the sea from an altitude of 261 meters, it echoes the mausoleum of Imedghassen that we will discover a week later.

Tipaza → Alger

1h3070 km

You head towards Algiers the White, a contemporary capital built amphitheater-style on the bay. Upon your arrival, lunch in the city before setting off to discover Algiers' capital. The afternoon is devoted to visiting the Casbah of Algiers, a medina listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. From the port to the Ottoman citadel, this fortified city extends over the heights of the city. You walk through its winding streets, vaulted passages and staircases, discovering the Raïs Palace (Bastion 23), the Ketchaoua Mosque and former Turkish patrician residences.

At the end of the day, you head to the heights of Bologhine to discover the Basilica of Notre-Dame d'Afrique, accessible by cable car. Built in 1872 by architect Jean-Eugène Fromageau in a Romano-Byzantine style, it is considered the twin sister of Notre-Dame de la Garde in Marseille. It is notably distinguished by its apse facing southwest, rather than east.

Algiers, between museums, Jardin d'Essai and historic center

This full day in Algiers begins with a visit to the National Museum of Fine Arts, one of the most important in Africa. Its collections, spanning from the 14th to the 20th century, notably bring together Orientalist paintings, works from the Algiers School and modern Algerian art. You then proceed to the Martyrs' Memorial (Maqam Echahid), an iconic monument erected in 1982 for the twentieth anniversary of independence. Overlooking Algiers Bay, it consists of three concrete palms standing 92 meters high. You continue with a visit to the National Museum of the Moudjahid, dedicated to the history of the war of liberation.

Lunch in an Algerian restaurant.

In the afternoon, you discover the Hamma Botanical Garden, one of the largest botanical gardens in Africa. Created in 1832 and spanning forty hectares, it brings together over 3,000 plant species, including royal palms, giant fig trees, a bamboo grove and various exotic plants. It was also here that Tarzan was filmed in 1932.

At the end of the day, embark on a stroll through Algiers' Haussmann district. You discover the Grand Post Office, built in 1910 in Neo-Moorish style, then Didouche-Mourad Street, formerly Michelet Street, the arcades and the Floral Clock.

Dinner in a typical restaurant in the city.

Entry into Roman Algeria

Alger → Djemila

3h250 km

You leave early in the morning heading east via the East-West Highway. The road crosses the high plateaus and Atlasic foothills before leading you, halfway through, to Djemila, the ancient city of Cuicul.

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, Djemila is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful Roman ensembles in the world. The ancient city is located at 900 meters altitude, surrounded by green hills whose landscape recalls that of Tuscany.

Lunch on site.

In the afternoon, you explore the site in depth with your guide. The tour takes you to the civil forum, then to the Severan forum, the capitol and the great arch of Caracalla. You also discover the theater nestled against the hillside, with a capacity of 3,000 seats, the Christian basilica and the Severan district, where wealthy villas are located.

You continue with the Djemila Museum, located at the entrance to the site and housing one of the finest collections of Roman mosaics in the world.

Djemila → Constantine

2h150 km

Between Suspended Bridges and the Legacy of Cirta in Constantine

This day is devoted to discovering Constantine, the ancient Cirta, perched on its rock above the Rhumel Gorges, more than 200 metres deep. Nicknamed the "City of Suspended Bridges", it can be discovered through its various neighbourhoods and viewpoints.

In the morning, you walk across the emblematic bridges of Constantine: the Sidi M'Cid Bridge, the El Kantara Bridge, the Mellah Slimane Footbridge and the Sidi Rached Bridge, which offer different panoramas of the gorges. You continue with a visit to the Ahmed Bey Palace, built between 1825 and 1835 and representative of Algerian beylik architecture.

Lunch in a traditional restaurant in town.

In the afternoon, you visit the Cirta National Museum, which houses collections of archaeology, ethnography and fine arts, then discover the Great Mosque, the oldest religious building in the city.

You end the day in the Souika, an old popular neighbourhood with winding alleyways descending towards the gorges, to discover a vibrant facet of Constantine.

Timgad, Discovery of the "African Pompeii"

Constantine → Timgad

1h3090 km

You head south along the Aurès highlands. As you travel, the landscape gradually changes: the irrigated lands of the Tell give way to a vast pre-Alpine steppe, gradually announcing the Sahara.

You arrive at Timgad, the ancient Thamugadi, a Roman city founded by Emperor Trajan in 100 AD. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and nicknamed the "African Pompeii", it reveals today a vast complex of Roman ruins.

Accompanied by your guide, you explore the city and its grid plan, organized around the cardo maximus and the decumanus. The visit then takes you to the Arch of Trajan, the theatre, the forum, the capitol, the baths, the library and the Christian basilica. On the forum, an inscription humorously sums up a certain Roman art of living: "To hunt, to bathe, to play, to laugh, this is to live".

Lunch at the site, then visit of the Timgad museum and its mosaics.

Timgad → Batna

In the late afternoon, you resume your journey towards Batna. Upon arrival, check-in, dinner and overnight stay.

Trip to Biskra

Morning visit to the Royal Mausoleum of Imedghassen, a Numidian funerary monument dating from the 3rd century BC, probably the tomb of a Numidian king ancestor of Massinissa. Its stepped cone structure and cylindrical drum are the architectural prototype that would inspire, two centuries later, the Royal Mausoleum of Mauretania that we discovered near Tipaza. Viewing it from the eastern side symbolically closes the great loop of ancient Algérie.

Batna → Biskra

4h220 km

You head south through the Aurès, land of the Chaouias, a Berber population that keeps its traditions and language alive. As you travel, the landscape becomes more mineral and the high plateaus gradually give way to gorges and cliffs. You stop at the Balconies of Ghoufi, a deep canyon bordered by ochre cliffs where ancient troglodytic villages cling to the rock. At the bottom of the gorges, you can see a palm grove arranged in terraces, cultivated in this steep environment. Lunch with a view of the Balconies of Ghoufi.

You then continue towards Biskra passing through the gorges of El Kantara, nicknamed the "mouth of the Sahara". The passage gradually marks the entrance into a new environment: on the other side of the wadi, the climate, light and vegetation change. You are now entering Saharan territory.

Arrival in Biskra, nicknamed the "Queen of the Zibans" and known throughout Algérie for its Deglet Nour dates.

In the Footsteps of Étienne Dinet

Morning city tour in Biskra: visit of the palm grove with countless gardens enclosed by earthen walls, and discovery of the old town. Biskra was in the 19th century a popular winter resort for European aristocracies — André Gide stayed there and wrote some pages of his "Immoralist" there.

Biskra → Bou Saâda

3h220 km

You head west across the high steppe plateaus, heading towards Bou Saâda, nicknamed the "City of Happiness". The journey crosses sober landscapes, between steppes scattered with alfa grass, flocks of sheep and mud-brick ksours.

Lunch on the road.

You arrive in Bou Saâda in the mid-afternoon. Nestled at the foot of the Ouled Naïl mountains, this oasis was an important center of pictorial Orientalism at the turn of the 20th century. French painter Étienne Dinet, who became Nasreddine Dinet after his conversion to Islam, lived there and drew much of his inspiration from it. Late in the afternoon, enjoy a free discovery of the ksar and the palm grove, before dinner and the night.

Entry into the pentapolis

Morning in Bou Saâda: visit to the Étienne Dinet Museum, which preserves the painter's works, his notebooks, his photographs, and testifies to his deep immersion in Saharan culture. Discovery of the old ksar and further exploration of the palm grove.

Traditional lunch in Bou Saâda.

Bou Saâda → Ghardaïa

5h380 km

Road south through the steppes landscapes of the Saharan Atlas. We cross a major geographical threshold as we approach Laghouat — beyond, the Sahara truly begins. The roads become straight, the horizon opens up, the first great desert expanses appear.

Arrival in Ghardaïa in late afternoon. Capital of the M'Zab valley, Ibadite territory listed as UNESCO World Heritage since 1982, the Mozabite pentapolis is one of the most extraordinary examples in the world of spontaneous and functional urbanism. It was here that the Ibadite Berbers — a branch of Islam apart, formed in the 8th century —, driven back from central Maghreb by successive Sunni powers, founded in the 11th century a veritable archipelago of fortified cities.

Installation in a guesthouse in the heart of the palm grove. Dinner and first contact with Mozabite architecture and cuisine. Night.

In the heart of the M'Zab Valley

This day immerses you in the heart of the M'Zab pentapolis. In the morning, you discover El Atteuf, the "dean of the ksour" and the first Mozabite settlement in the valley, founded in 1012. You visit the mausoleum of Sidi Brahim, recognizable by its austere architecture, white walls and curved forms. The place notably inspired Le Corbusier for the Ronchamp chapel in Haute-Saône.

Traditional Mozabite lunch at a local home or guesthouse.

In the afternoon, you set out to explore Beni Isguen, a fortified city of the M'Zab founded in 1321. Its visit is carried out in respect of community rules: presence of a local guide, covering clothing and prohibition of photographing people. You then climb to the Bordj Boulila watchtower, which offers a panorama of the pentapolis. If your visit coincides with late afternoon, you witness the auction market, an auction sale of objects, clothing and local products organized on the market square. The discovery continues in the Gardens of the World, with a presentation of the traditional water-sharing system allowing the palm groves to be irrigated in this arid environment.

Return to the guesthouse in early evening. Dinner and overnight stay.

On the first dunes

Morning in Ghardaïa proper. Visit of the old town, dominated by the pyramidal minaret of the Grand Mosque of the Ksar — an imposing building constructed at the highest point of the hill, from where the desert approaches were once monitored. Stroll through the lively souk: arcaded galleries, Berber carpets, pottery, dates, spices, ironwork. Commerce has always been the soul of Ghardaïa, which was for centuries a major caravan crossroads between the Sahel and the Mediterranean.

Discovery of Bounoura and Melika, which complete the pentapolis. Melika is famous for its vast terraced cemetery facing the valley — the aligned tombs, austere, create a meditative atmosphere facing the vastness of the desert.

Ghardaïa → El Goléa

3h30370 km

Route towards the south-west in the direction of El Golé, at the beginning of the Erg Occidental. The landscape changes radically: the hammada (stony plateau) gradually gives way to the first great dunes. Arrival at El Goléa in late afternoon. Visit of the old fortified ksar. Excursion by 4×4 for the sunset over the salt lake and surrounding dunes — one of the most magical moments of the journey, when the sands shift from golden to deep orange before setting the entire horizon ablaze.

Dinner and night at El Goléa.

El Goléa: Following in the Footsteps of Charles de Foucauld

The morning is devoted to discovering El Goléa. You first visit the old ksar, perched on its red hill, before heading to the chapel that houses the tomb of Father Charles de Foucauld. Transferred here in 1929 from his hermitage in Tamanrasset, where he was murdered in 1916, Charles de Foucauld spent the last twenty years of his life in the heart of the Hoggar. He who loved to define himself as a « universal brother » notably produced the first Tuareg-French dictionary there.

Early lunch.

El Goléa → Timimoun

6h410 km

You head west towards Timimoun, capital of Gourara, via the Transsaharan. This long crossing takes you through the landscapes of southern Erg Occidental, where regs, dune ridges and palm grove-oases alternate, appearing in the hollows of valleys. You arrive at Timimoun "the Red" in late afternoon. The city, built in ochre adobe, overlooks its palm grove and the sebkha, a dried salt lake that reveals itself under the light of sunset. You also discover the Sudano-Saharan architecture characteristic of Timimoun, with its crenellated facades, geometric patterns in relief and doors decorated with Berber motifs.

Check-in at a guesthouse. Dinner and overnight stay.

Exploration of Gourara and Timimoun Oases

This day is dedicated to discovering Gourara, one of the three major oases in south-western Algérie with Touat and Saoura. In the morning, you set off by 4×4 towards the Ighzer palm grove and the village of Ouled Saïd, a ksar with red earthen walls, vaulted alleyways and carved wooden screens. You then cross the sebkha, a vast white expanse of salt, before discovering several red ksour nestled amid dune landscapes. The day also allows you to discover the traditional system of foggaras: underground galleries dug to capture water and channel it by gravity to the palm groves. You learn more about collective water sharing, organized through "combs" called kasriya.
Lunch under a khaïma, in a palm grove or at the edge of the dunes depending on the programme.

In the afternoon, several activities are offered as options: camel ride, quad biking tour in the dunes of the Grand Erg Occidental or simply a moment dedicated to watching the sunset from a dune.

Return to the North

Morning in Timimoun. Visit of the "red castle" — former Le Caïd hotel, built during the colonial era in pure Sudano-Saharan style and which remains the architectural emblem of the city. Discovery of the craft market (wickerwork, Tuareg and Zenete jewelry, indigo fabrics), stroll through the alleys of the old town and along the corniche overlooking the sebkha — final contemplation of this red and green landscape, ochre and blue, which exists nowhere else.

Lunch in Timimoun.

1h50870 km

Transfer to the airport and Air Algérie flight in late afternoon to Algiers. Arrival at Houari Boumediene in early evening and transfer to the hotel near the airport. Farewell dinner and overnight stay.
