A Brief History of Timimoun

Timimoun has shown signs of human presence since prehistoric times. Rock art dating back to this period has been discovered there.

The city is said to have been founded in the 13th century by Sidi Musa U-Lmesaud, a local saint. Timimoun was once a major commercial hub of Gourara. Thanks to its strategic location, it facilitated trade between nomads of the High Steppe Plateaus and the inhabitants of the southern oases. Dates, from its rich palm groves, were exchanged for essential goods such as wheat, tea and sugar.

Today, Timimoun retains this role as an oasis and cultural crossroads, while standing as a living witness to its commercial past.
