Discovering the beauty of Tadrart Rouge
Its red and striking landscapes
Tadrart Rouge is not merely a sand desert, but a place of distinctive geomorphology, renowned for the beauty and singularity of its landscapes. Throughout your journey, you will discover cliffs, canyons, rocky peaks, natural arches, as well as numerous ergs (desert dunes).
The ergs of Tadrart Rouge are known for their reddish hue – nuanced with 9 different colours, which vary with the sun's movement. At times coloured in orange, yellow or red, the dunes thus offer a sublime spectrum.
Its rock paintings
The desert zone of Tadrart Rouge is also renowned for its rock art – a collection of approximately 15,000 prehistoric engravings! Among these works, you will be able to admire giraffes, antelopes, crocodiles, herds of elephants, as well as animal prints engraved in the rock…
So many animal traces in the middle of the desert? Indeed! For the Tadrart Rouge region was once a lush area where, as the rock paintings testify, wildlife was abundant (today's arid landscapes were once covered by great lakes). The desert's arid climate is responsible for the exceptional preservation of the site's pictorial works.
Its endemic fauna
Although animal life is now far less abundant, the Tadrart Rouge region nevertheless harbours a few species on its lands, such as the agama lizard (or "sand lizard"), snakes and scorpions!
Exploring the Sahara desert in Algérie by camel or 4x4
On camelback
Camel trekking is an unusual (and traditional) way to explore Tadrart Rouge. It offers an unforgettable experience alongside these charming animals, used as a means of transport for millennia – thanks to their great tolerance of desert climate, their resistance to heat and thirst. In this case, the 4x4 is used solely to ensure the expedition's logistics.
By 4x4
It is also possible to explore Tadrart Rouge by 4x4. This all-terrain vehicle allows you to travel easily, adapting to different landscapes (rocky, sandy, etc.), or to access more remote areas – less accessible by camel. 4x4s are often used for multi-day excursions, as they allow you to cover long distances and easily reach bivouac zones.
With a local guide
An immersion in Tadrart Rouge is undertaken alongside a Tuareg guide; a guide of choice, who possesses in-depth knowledge of the desert. Through their expertise, they ensure the safety of their group, guiding them through arid – and hostile territories, without any experience.
By their side, visitors also have the certainty of seeing the hidden treasures of this vast landscape and its emblematic sites, such as the Tamesguida arch or one of the sublime rock engravings of giraffes, which testify to the "African humid period" (born during the Pleistocene period, approximately 14,500 years ago).
To know Desert exploration is a guided excursion. During this experience, you will be accompanied by your guide, as well as a cook and one or more driver(s), to ensure the logistics of the expedition by 4x4. |
What level of fitness is needed for a trip to the Sahara?
Exploring the Algerian desert does not require particular physical fitness. Nevertheless, it is preferable to engage in sport or hiking regularly, if you opt for a stay of several days.
Indeed, certain excursions may require several hours of walking: even if you travel lightly loaded (bags are transported by the logistics service), walking in sand under the sun can be tiring for someone who is not very athletic.
Note The ideal period to explore Tadrart Rouge and the Algerian Sahara is between October and early May. A tip? Avoid summer, as temperatures can reach 40°C during the day. |
Sleeping close to nature in Tadrart Rouge
An immersion in the Tadrart Rouge desert is also a fine opportunity to sleep in the heart of a wild setting, and to reconnect with nature. For this? You will sleep in a bivouac, an ephemeral encampment made of canvas or tents.
Sleeping in Tadrart Rouge is also a unique opportunity to observe the stars. Far from city lights, the sky offers a superb exceptional spectacle with a completely clear celestial vault.
What to pack for an excursion in the Algerian desert?
Even in summer, nights in the Tadrart Rouge desert can be very cool, with temperatures dropping to 5°C! Sleeping bags are not provided by the tour operator: when packing, make sure your sleeping bag model is suitable for low temperatures (0/-5°C). For a successful excursion, also remember to bring: - light clothing (for the day) and warm clothing (for the evening); - long-sleeved t-shirts and fluid trousers to protect yourself from the sun; - plastic pouches, to protect your smartphone and/or camera from sand.
