Between ancient ruins, fine-sand beaches, and enchanting landscapes, Tipaza offers a journey through time and an unforgettable nature escape. Discover the treasures of this pearl of the Algerian coastline.

A Glimpse of History

Tipaza was founded in the 6th century BCE by the Phoenicians. It initially served as a maritime stopover. Its name indeed means "place of passage" or "stopover".

The city experienced remarkable growth under the Roman Empire, and was elevated to the rank of Colonia Aelia Tipasensis between 145 and 147. This status granted Roman citizenship to its free inhabitants.

Christianity took strong root there, as evidenced by the Basilica of Saint Salsa. Unfortunately, the Vandals sacked the city around 430.

Despite a brief Byzantine revival in the 6th century, Tipaza gradually declined. The Arabs named it Tefassed, meaning "deteriorated". It wasn't until 1854 that the modern city was founded, breathing new life into the ancient, history-laden site.
